The Pearl Project has recently conducted tuberculosis and leprosy testing in Betio.
According to Mareta Hauma, the project’s Lead Nurse, the initiative targeted every household in South Tarawa and Betio for individuals aged 3 years and older.
Hauma explained that if someone in a household tests positive, everyone in the household, including newborns, will be tested.
She emphasized that this approach is crucial for the health of the entire family. She also encouraged residents of South Tarawa and Betio to stay at home while the team conducts their visits, noting that medical certificates will be provided to those who need them for work.
The Pearl Project is funded by the Australian Government and is a collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the University of Sydney.
